MSI GT780R012US was my choice to facilitate
Second Life™. As designs are a moving target, the
MSI GT780DX has superseded that model.
While I have never been "a gamer",
it turns out that Second Life™ and other virtual worlds like it,
are actually more demanding of both internet and compute resources
than any of the traditional "games", because, unlike the
predefined static worlds of traditional games where the data is
already installed on your local disk, everything of the virtual world
must be downloaded and rendered in real time, because the world is
completely dynamic. Therefore, it demands the very highest-end gaming hardware.
I have learned a lot in the time frame from early April of 2010 when my
high powered workstation fried, to my soon to be re-liberated gaming reality
with the arrival of my new laptop, as I have been living on an underpowered
laptop that offers no 3D graphics hardware. Without this
underpowered experience I might never have developed compassion for the
"reality" of those with lesser hardware, and most of all,
it taught me a lot about the design and building of environments
within SL™ to improve the experience for those on lesser hardware.
I'll never forget a spiritual gathering I once attempted to attend in SL™
which was exquisitely beautiful and detailed, but because the meeting space
was a rotating disk, the entire environment was dynamic, and, ultimately
I had to give up and leave the event, because my hardware was
quite simply incapabable of keeping up with the demands of the rotating world.
Rotating but simple? OK. Exquisitely detailed but not moving? OK.
Highly detailed and continually rotating? Very elitist.
My weekend was consumed with geeky frustration, as we neared the new Moon cycle and Mercury going direct, things being close to moving forward, but I endured seemingly endless cycles of trial and error, partial success and then failure, trying to coax the very latest of hardware to share two operating systems which despise each other. The only reason I'm tolerating W7 is because I need it to run their dashboard software for my Drobo. Finally having software support to configure my Drobo, I discovered that it won't power up at all. It happens to be my first experience with Windows as well, so all its quirks are a whole new learning curve, as is dual-booting that with Linux™, and they're arguing over who gets to be in control of both the disk formatting and partitioning, and the boot process. After more than a half a dozen installs each into each OS. I gave up on using the built-in intel(doh!) hardware RAID, and used the Debian installer to partition and format Linux™ software RAID, and allocated NTFS partitions which W7 insists on overruling, overformatting, etc. I've moved to pure Debian Testing with an XFCE desktop for my new laptop, leaving Kubuntu Studio 10.04.3 LTS for now on my olde ToughBook. Once I get stabilized and self-sufficient on my new lappy, I'll risk my pending hardware upgrade for my olde ToughBook upon which I now depend for everything.

With the advent of "Display Names" I've been able to claim my physical world name for my Avatar, and I usually wear "Celestial Angela" as my "group tag" in SL™.
Celeste's voice from her classes is recorded for sharing on this website, primarily so that many benefit via the presentation style or modality convenient for their access. Celeste presents in voice, repeats text questions for the sake of those listening only, an event in public chat and spatial voice, not private IMs or private voice calls. Linden Lab has informed us all that they may monitor any spatial voice or public text chat, so privacy is not reliably expectable in spatial voice or public text chat. There is neither lawfully nor legally anything which gives the liable party behind the actions of their avatar, the right to publish, without the other avatar's specific consent, the contents of private IMs or Voice Calls. No person can unilaterally override their contract with Linden Lab which includes their Terms of Service prohibiting revealing private communications. I will immediately mute, to prevent accidental or unintentional communicating with them, anyone I find claiming the right to ignore the T.O.S. and publish private communications, and I would appreciate cooperation by your muting me, so that we do not communicate.
Second Life® is a 3D virtual "reality", in which you are represented by an Avatar (often abbreviated as "AV"), which you can edit to look like anything you want, including a perfectly normal, or exquisitely beautiful human, beyond the powers of RL plastic surgery. As commented by a notable avatar: "[2010-08-21 11:27:20] IM: Cheshyr Pontchartrain: If I cared what I looked like, I would be female, and live in California. By the way, progressively over time I've become more in tune with faery energies so much that, aside from occasional periods as a mermaid, I'm usually appearing as a Pleiadian Faery in Second Life... 2 meters tall like a Pleiadian, rather than tiny like a traditional Faery, and usually with Faery wings... occasionally butterfly wings, but mostly my appearance is basically human.
In this particular virtual world, about the only thing you can count on being most probably "real" is the adultness of an age-verified "adult" Avatar. You may never really know if the human operating the avatar is male or female, as you are not required to reveal anything about your "1st life" / "Real Life" ("RL") via the information you display in your "2nd Life" / "SL™" profile. While the Avatar's profile may be used to display a limited amount of information about the "Real Life" human behind the Avatar, that information is not verified or certified by anyone. While the earliest of members of SL™ got to choose their in-world names, it is now the case that you get to choose your first name, and then Linden Lab, owner / operator of SL™, gives you a limited list to choose from, of last names not yet associated with your chosen first name, therefor, sharing of last names in SL™ implies no family association, and is the least personal aspect of a member's identity. It is also possible to have multiple AVs per human being. It is also possible to have multiple human beings share the login-account of a particular AV. Therefore, you may encounter anything from total honesty and congruity between an in-world avatar and a real life human being, or you may encounter only fantasy, with all alleged "facts" about an AV's "real life" being even more fantasy than the avatar itself. What you will find most often is a complete lack of any details about a person's "Real Life" being displayed in their profile, which is a clear indication that they're in SL™ purely for fantasy.
Some SL™ terms you'll see:
The use of the terms "1st Life" and "2nd Life" are fairly logical and simple; you had to 1st, be alive in a human body, to use it to sign-up for an account to create your 2nd "incarnation" as an Avatar in Second Life®. We also tend, within the cocreated shared "collective consciousness", to refer to the 3D illusion within "The Matrix", the "collective 'reality'", as "The Real World", at least within the atheistic religion known as "Western Science", and the illusions of all its' limited and erroneous "theories" about the nature of and operation of, "reality". In this paradigm, the physical world is "real", and higher frequencies / lighter densities / meta-physical / spiritual / aetheric aspects of multideminsional existence are treated as being illusion or called "unreal". By contrast, one of the things pretty much agreed upon by eastern spritual or religious traditions, is that, while our manifestation into and through physical bodies is temporary (and therefore not as real as), our spiritual essence is eternal and therefore far more "real". Because the broad range of human (lack of) consciousness renders a large range of perspective by humans in terms of what they believe "they are", and what they believe "is real", those humans, when incarnating into Second Life®, carry those beliefs and attitudes with them into their Avatars. Thus there are those for whom, believing only the physical world is real, treat all of Second Life® as "just a game", none of it is "real" to them at all. The Organic Portal, being limited to the use of lower chakras, and lacking an individuated soul, is not able to make a soul or spirit connection at all, and therefore, also cannot do so via relationships in "2nd Life". For those of us who have experienced spiritual awakening and identify ourselves as eternal spirits, only the spiritual realm is truly "real", and both physical human bodies and 3D virtual world Avatars, are equally "not me", but merely vehicles of expression for the real spirit. One of the problems with SL™ is that the primary modality of communication, text chat, is the realm of ego, so all the ego issues are right in our faces already, but we don't yet have the benefit of any of the actual connecting, while we may have soul connection, we lack the sensitivity of non-verbal communication, the awareness of the other's emotions.

For those who see SL™ as a game, their AV is unreal to them, and therefore they may make it anything from a mechanoid to an animal / human crossbreed. For those of us who see it as a way to express our spirit / soul essence, it is often constructed to be an idealized form of our own human incarnation. Ask anyone if they'd like to change something about their human body, and most would change something, and thus in constructing one's AV in SL™, it is easy to express one's ideals, unlimited by the relative staticness of a physical human body, or one may play with a variety of fantasies, as changing one's AV is only a few mouse-clicks away. Because my self identity is as a formless spirit, and because my self image is more rooted in my past lives as a Pleiadian than anything else, I constructed my AV to be based on my current human form, perfected, and modified to be more Pleiadian in expression. I also really enjoy wearing wings, and Faery/Fairy/Fairey expression.
If you have any hope of porting a relationship you create via SL™ out into RL, then you are best advised to make your AV very much like your RL physical self, because any incongruencies between your SL™ and RL "realities" are likely to be stumbling blocks for those who thought that they had "gotten to know you" in SL™.
I approached SL™ with a specific intent to go there for fun, and to share with others there, purely for fun, and purely for positive cocreation, because the primary focus of my RL has been and is, working as a healer, on helping others overcome their problems. I also approached SL™ with an intent to express and explore specific fantasies I hadn't yet found expression for through my human body in physical reality. Having explored my fantasies, I then found myself refocussing upon prioritizing my experiences to be purely a vehicle for meeting real people for RL relating.
As a clairvoyant, one sensitive to spiritual energies, who can find a spirit based merely upon seeing a picture of someone, or upon the knowing of their name, it is for me quite simple and easy, to use the name of an entity's Avatar, or their picture in their profile, to find their spirit, and to connect with them spiritually in the aetheric, to connect on the mental plane, to connect soul to soul, to connect astrally and experience their emotional state, lacking only physical connection between bodies. If they are equally conscious of those aspects of themself, then they will also be conscious of any energy exchange between us, whereas if they are not conscious of those aspects of themself, they cannot be conscious of the connections happening on those levels. Lacking a physical body connection, the "realness" of any connection is truly that of the metaphysical, the spiritual, the astral, the soulful.
The virtual world of Second Life® is subdivided into realms of P.G. (Parental Guidance), Mature, and Adult spaces, mirroring the division of "Real" Life. Sadly, the same dysfunctional rating system allows your participation to specify maximum levels of "adultness", but fails completely to provide the mirror: the ability to set a minimum level of adultness you'll tolerate. Adult relationships in SL™ differ somewhat from those in RL, in that there are no sexually transmitted diseases which can pass from one Avatar to another, and because "the law" treats SL™ as not being real, therefor even sexually oriented behaviour such as sex-for-Linden$ is legal. Thus it is quite prevalent that, adult Avatars are having a lot of sexual relationships, and psycho-sexual relationships in SL™. Because some people have convinced themselves that SL™ is "not real", they also succeed in convincing themselves, that the "sex" that they're having in SL™ is "not real" and therefor is not adulterous if they're having it with someone other than their RL partner. If there is no actual spiritual / soul / emotional connection between the people behind the avatars having sex with each other, then what is really going on is merely an interactively directed form of pornography that two or more people are simultaneously watching, and as is often the case, each is creating self-pleasuring with their focus upon that mutually shared pornography, and they can convince themselves that all is merely innocent fantasy, it's "just a game". It is however a well known fact that, whatever we experience in our consciousness, affects our eternal souls and spirits, therefore even for those disconnected from their spirit / soul experience, they are still being permanently affected thereby, including the development of karma for whatever they've chosen to do. For the energetically conscious being, connecting through the communications media of SL™, with another energetically conscious being, what is being created and exchanged with another, with or without any sexual component, is in fact, a Tantric spiritual relationship, which forms the basis of testing for spirit and soul compatibility, and therefore, allows for the recognition of and formation of soul-mated relationships.
Tantric relationships are initiated at the spiritual level, and progress downwards from the intent of spirit, and from the choice of compatible partner at the spiritual level, where spirit directs two incarnate beings to meet and connect, and proceeds downwards through the chakras, until only lastly, is there a body and / or sexual connection established. This kind of relationship is experienced by at most 15% of the human population on Ter-Ra, while 85% of humans on Ter-Ra create relationships based on mutual needs fulfillment of lower chakras, seeking partners who are compatiblie on the personality and ego level, and who provide for their physical, emotional, sexual, and monetary needs, and may get as high as the heart chakra level where actual love happens. If there was a large level of unconsciousness in both partners at the time of mating, then by not being conscious of and directed by their own soul truth, they are likely to have failed to chose a partner who is soul compatible, a soulmate, and as the relationship progresses, they may find ever less compatibility as they each grow in consciousness to be more true to their own soul, they discover that the relationship needs to end because it was never appropriate. Alternatively, in order to maintain the relationship, e.g. if they've exchanged vows of "marriage until death do they part", they'll have to limit their own spiritual consciousness and growth to remain in "ignorant bliss" in an illusion that it's ok their compatibility is only personality and ego-level based. This kind of relating is also, naturally, the predominant experience in 2nd Life. While this worldly relationship may start out feeling OK, over time there may be less compatibility, as the differing soul nature pulls the individuals in different directions of growth.
In the Tantric relationship, all of the relationship issues come up immediately at the beginning of the relationship, because, while the spirits and souls are ultimately perfectly compatible, any ego personality issues in each individual, whereby they are not fully manifesting their spirit / soul truth, represent a discrepancy from the spirit / soul nature, and those differences are likely to conflict between the two partners, and based on their ego personalities, they may not like each others personalities at all, yet, as the relationship progresses, and each individual grows to be more in alignment with, enlightened by, and directed by their own spirit / soul truth, they find that their relationship is continually improving, they are becoming ever more compatible, and therefore, merely recognizing the nature of Tantric relationships, if they are committed to truth and spiritual growth with a soulmate, they may rapidly overcome if not just overlooking, any ego compatibility issues, and persist in spiritual growth into the ultimately perfect union as soul-mates. If the couple either already had an aligned mission in life, or is wise enough to choose a shared mission in recognition of their ultimate soul-mate compatibility, then the positive synergy of union, by being further blessed by a full alignment of will, not only greatly serves them individually for their own soul growth, and as a couple in perfect soul harmony, but it also serves to empower them with synergy in doing a shared mission in the world.
The most challenging part of this kind of relationship... moving the relationship out of 2nd Life, into the physical world, fully manifesting the soulmatedness through physical bodies is likely to be somewhat challenging, as, it would be rare for your soulmate to just happen to live next door to you, so one really has to be connected with and committed to, knowing and living life from one's own soul truth and nature, to uproot at least one of the partners, walk away from a preexisting life and plans for that life, and instead converge the two lives into one in one geographical location, probably across national borders. Further complications arise as discrepancies are realized between the "realities" experienced virtually, versus those of the physical manifestation.
Because who we really are is blobs of light, spiritual energy of a higher dimension, then we must also realize that, the concept of exclusivity in relationships is actually far more important in the realm of energy, where we are real and eternal, than it is in a lesser realm, such as virtual world avatars or physical world bodies, so pair-bonding of a soul-mated pair, is not just about the fidelity and excusivity of bodies, but about what energies are shared, uniquely between soul-mates, as well as what is shared on the body level.
While those in denial consider SL relationships to be unreal / merely a game of fantasy, because the real soul of ensouled beings is participating and optionally connecting, in fact, SL relationships are just as real as RL relationships for ensouled beings, so that relationships developed in SL are prototypes of RL relationships. There is a manner of relating, which can be practiced in SL, which participants could then expect replicated in RL, as the relationship initiated in SL is exported to RL.

SL™ seems to have evolved it's own unique variant of the traditional Real Life games of dominance, submission, bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism.
A trend we are seeing is enabling access to SL™ via web browser, and since the existing viewers have been based on OpenGL, it will be no surprise to see a version based on WebGL. Unfortunately, there are lot of problems which come with allowing anonymous guests to enter SL™ with anonymity.
The worst idea Linden Lab ever had is their Merging Adult and Child grids. In order to sidestep any legal liability having to do with children, I am therefore forced to rate my sim as Mature, so, that affects attending my meditation seminars.
The Linden Lab Viewer 2.0 is fairly unpopular, whereas most users prefer Phoenix Viewer, reborn from the ashes of the extremely popular Third Party Viewer: (Greenlife) Emerald Viewer.
Apple QuickTime Security Issues are a serious threat.
Linden Lab has standardized this global phenomenon not on the global standard time Universal Time Cooridnated, but instead upon U.S. Pacific which observes Daylight Savings. Further brokenness is that "Second Life days cycles are 4 hours long (3 hours of light, 1 hour of dark)". Things may appear to be broken unless you configure everything optimally.

Celestial Angela has hacked a bash script, celestial_music, to enable listening in Real Life to the same audio streams you heard in-world played on a "SHOUTCAST2SL JUKEBOX". Download to your /usr/local/bin directory, chmod +x, and then execute.
For those who don't want to remember keyboard shortcuts, the Second Life™ Keyboard should come in real handy.
The Sim / Region / Homestead Estate Greenlands is divided into a few parcels on the ground level, having their own independent audio and media and voice chat channels, versus the main area, Celestial Abode, which shares one music channel, one media channel, and one spatial voice-chat channel, (subject to standard SL™ chat range limitations).
Parcel audio / music at Greenlands / Celestial Abode is generally configured to be a soul nurturing new-agey stream of ambient music.
Parcel video / media at Greenlands / Celestial Abode is generally configured to be a body enlivening jazz stream of danceable music. The parcel media URL can be set for shared viewing by visitors of Celestial Abode. While it is possible to simply enter any URL, or browse for media via the WWWeb, there are also "bookmarks" available in the media viewers.
The "Prim Monster" is hypothecated to have a voracious appetite for prims, and thus is disposed to consume the items which are the primmiest. One can become a prim monster by attempting to build or rez enough virtual reality to exhaust the number of available prims within a region, and thus be forced to de-rez something else from the region in order to have enough room for your prims.
