"The Tantric Mysticism of Tibet"

This book is deprecated in my booklist for its' affirmation of suffering and sacrifice (page 158 first new paragraph) in "Upon his withdrawal from samadhi for the second time, the actual generation of Bodhicitta commences. Longing for the Liberation of all beings and praying that his own deliverance from Samsara shall take place after theirs, he visualizes the sentient universe as composed of myriads of beings all of which have been his own parents in former lives. [...]". As more and more beings approach liberation, with this affirmation in place we all wind up waiting for each other to go, a logical inversion of what should be our intent that we all upon choice get to ascend when we choose. Meanwhile, delaying the ascension of everyone, it affirms being in suffering as the best place to help others escape suffering, yet we learn best by apeing others, copying what is modelled, thus this is maximally dysfunctional in addition to its' logical impossibility. I do not doubt that John has accurately portrayed what he was taught. Most of the book is an excellent exposition of the tradition, but the practices leave room for improvement, traditional or not. Since one of the points of Tantric practice is the short path to enlightenment, this stands out as a glaring logical contradiction. This being my second reading of the book at a much later point on my private short path than my initial acquisition and reading of it, it is also the point at which I stopped reading and decided to gift it out of my library... 2003-03-04 Angela Kahealani

This author is virtually villified by some people for a variety of reasons, so recommending a specific aspect of this specific book should not be construed as a recommendation of anything else about him... use your own discernment.
